3 Valuable Benefits of Joining Student Organizations in College

What happens outside the college classroom is just as important as what happens inside. Here are three good reasons to get involved in student organizations.

New college students often wonder what their first year will bring, how hard it will be to make new friends, and how much they'll have to study to pass their classes. With all of that on your plate—in addition to a part-time job, perhaps—joining a student organization is probably the last thing on your mind. But that shouldn’t be the case. Student groups can be an important part of your growth during your college career. Not only do they provide the resources you need to succeed in the world, but they can introduce you to some of the best people you’ll ever meet and create friendships that last a lifetime. Student organizations will also give you access to opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. Being involved on campus is important to your attitude toward college and can either make or break your stay. Here are a few more reasons you should join student organizations in college.

1. Strengthen your time management and leadership skills

While dealing with the struggles of being a college student, you may feel that organizing your priorities and managing your time becomes a bit of a problem. Lucky for you, student organizations can help solve that problem. How can adding another activity to your huge list of responsibilities help you manage your time? Well, being busy allows you to organize your time more effectively and prioritize each task according to its importance, which not only helps you get through to graduation day but looks really good on your résumé as well. Employers want to see that you can balance work, life, and any other activities. They also like to see leadership and teamwork experience, which you can gain by joining student organizations, taking on more responsibilities, and making a difference in the campus community.

2. Build a bigger network

One of the most important things in college is networking with people who share similar interests. It gives you the chance to explore possible career opportunities and learn what it takes to reach your goals. Not only can you be exposed to real-world activities through student organizations, but you can learn from former students as they return to help guide you in the right direction. You'll have the opportunity to broaden your horizons, learn new skills, and meet people who can further your success as you transition from college to the real world.

3. Form strong friendships

Friends are why we do the things we do. They’re the reason we get gym memberships and why we take the same classes. Friends allow us to share our passions with people who see the world through a similar lens. Student organizations give you a chance to meet people who share similar interests as well as others who don’t. They allow you to expand your view of the world and grow as a person. If anything, try joining a group to meet new people and make friends. College can be a scary place if you’re on your own, and it’s nice to know you have someone rooting for you.

After joining a new student organization, you'll learn that college can actually be pretty fun. Student groups can give you that connection to your university you wouldn’t feel anywhere else. They can turn a set of old buildings into a new home. Getting involved on campus gives you the chance to make college more than just an education. So if you’re wondering whether you should get involved, ask yourself if you want to just attend a university or be a part of it.

CollegeXpress has helped me tremendously during my senior year of high school. I started off using the college search to find more information about the universities I was interested in. Just this tool alone gave me so much information about a particular school. It was my one-stop shop to learn about college. I was able to find information about college tuition, school rank, majors, and so much more that I can't list it all. The college search tool has helped me narrow down which college I want to attend, and it made a stressful process surprisingly not so stressful. I then moved to the scholarship search tool to find scholarships to apply for because I can't afford to pay for tuition myself. The search tool helped me find scholarships that I was eligible for. The tool gave me all the information I could ever need about a particular scholarship that was being offered. The CollegeXpress scholarship search tool is so much better than other tools offered, like the Chegg scholarship search. Thanks to CollegeXpress, I was able to apply to tons of scholarships in a relatively easy way!

CollegeXpress helped in my journey by comparing multiple colleges for my final decision. While looking at different colleges, I was able to compare the tuition expenses and that landed me with the college that I’m currently enrolled in, Western Kentucky University. Thank you!

The college application process has been a stressful one, but CollegeXpress has eased some of that stress with its readily available college resources. At the beginning of the process, I frequently used the college search feature, and now that I’m almost done applying, I’ve started using the scholarship search. Both of these resources have made it easier to find relevant information.

I never would have found the college I plan on attending without CollegeXpress! I've always been a person of ambition and have been dreaming of studying and working on my passion for law, legal studies, and political science. Washington College is where I plan on pursuing my career. My journey with my education has been difficult, and oftentimes, I was told I would never amount to much, but now I'm dual enrolled at Caroll Community College and have had experience in the fields I am dedicated to. Without the help of CollegeXpress (even in its early days), I would never have found Washington College and the information I need to apply and become a part of their community.

CollegeXpress has helped me with the college application process. The tips and tricks for important essays were so helpful. I also gained useful knowledge about college life. Even though I’m fully online, CollegeXpress has helped me develop a sense of how college is in person. The experiences from college students that were featured on their Instagram page have shown the good, the bad, and the “secret” life on campus from a reliable perspective. Not to mention, they relieved my feelings of anxiety about the workload. I can now understand how it can be stressful, but it takes self-control and willpower to get assignments completed on time and with quality.
